This is one rare piece, can't be more than a few hundred pressed - newer up for sale but I don't think that demand is very high either. Found this in a thrift a few weeks back and its not really my thing but still a interesting record. Couldn't find it online so I ripped the whole thing. Hard to label but improvised funky fusion-jazz with a prog vibe is close enough, released in my hometown Gothenburg in 1976. My choice cut here would be the jazzy "Mardröm" (Nightmare in english).

Swedish electronic pioner and budget producer Hans Edler with a anti nuclear power promotional 45. The A-side is cheesy disco of the worst kind but the flip, Melt Down is a dreamy ambient cosmic track. I guess its the soundtrack to post nuclear disaster. This is also included on the Space Vision LP but I think its cooler in this context.

Most swedes are familiar with the domestic genre "dance band", for outsiders I guess its hard to understand why this type of horrid music is so immensely popular. 99 times out of 100 these records are straight garbage but once in a while there is something of interest. On this LP there is a rather catchy latin tune and one shit track with a fierce and fast break.

This group sure choose the right name, their releases are damn hard to find. For some reason this thai group was touring scandinavia in the 70s and after a successful tour they recorded this LP in my hometown, Gothenburg. This is a swedish only release and its got some tight funk tracks on it, mostly covers but I think its well done and this raw version of Kool and the gangs Give it up is amazing with a B-Boy breaks vibe to it.

Danish schlager-king Tommy Seebach, the master mind behind many horrid songs somehow managed to produce this cosmic nugget. This is the 7" version, haven't heard the 12" but I assume its longer and maybe the part where the groove kicks in is a bit longer also. If not this really begs for a re-edit. Great tune none the less.

The Made in sweden LP is great from start to end with amazing artwork and the other 2 have some interesting tracks. Love Love Love by Pugh is no news to most, sampled by DJ Shadow way back and Baltiks No Registration, Please is just a prime slice of swedish progressive music featuring Janne Schaffer, J-son Lindh and others. If you like neo-prog like Dungen, give these a listen.

You can just pass the rest of their discog and skip right to the LP Lustavision which has a alternate version of this track plus another good track. Here is a "extended luxury" 12inch version, loud, long and DJ friendly with a bonus 80's sax breakdown. Big fave of mine, won't fail you when dropped right.

The lyrics of this song is beyond ridiculous, its praising the cool new sport windsurfing. But I still think is rather catchy and the rest of the LP is packed with equally silly disco/boogie tracks. With a less crappy singer this could have been seriously interesting record.

He's no Bill Withers but I still think this has its qualities, not as 80s as the OG. Swedish christian funk. Sounds a bit scary huh? Well it's mostly jazz-rock on this LP but one stand out track "Pröva själv", try it yourself in english, is a pretty tight funk number. Not funky 45 funk - but hey it's by a bunch of churchgoing swedes.

First out is Monica Törnell, I see her other LPs all the time but this one new to me. It's got some decent jazz-funk moments but the the rather unique sounding title track is my choice. A great summery tune that borders to being silly reggae-jazz but stays on the right side.

I moving so this will be my last post for some time, when my records and recording gear is back on track ill get posting again. So I'll go out with a bang. I got this LP from Ebay a while ago, some dude was selling a "LP lot - black artists". I spotted this in his pic and somewhere in the crate digging part of my brain bells went of. A week later I got this and a Rockie Robbins LP in my mail for 12$, bargain! The seller ripped me on the shipping but I let him know he sold a 600$ record for 12$ as payback. Anyway, this is some seriously rare private modern/boogie business released on the label Earthquake out of South Carolina. Whole LP is good - there is a little something for everyone. Boogie, soul, funk its all in the mix here. It was difficult to decide what tracks to post so I ripped the whole shabang - get it here. Enjoy!

Ralph Lundsten - Luna Lolita

Ralph Lundsten is by far the coolest musician in sweden. His sound is completly unique and his music is uncompromising with a raw, lo-fi funky electronic style. He is one of the pioners of home made electronic instruments, started building crazy stuff in the 50s and a truly visionary mind. Check him out in his cool studio here. This is one of his best tracks of the great Discophrenia LP with the cream of swedish musicians of the time.

My man Wlodek again, here he teams up with Maritza Horn - one of the top swedish soul singers of the time. Ill post her crossover masterpiece Subway baby next. This is a rather odd record, Wlodeks progressive fusion jazz merged with vocals that dont realy match. The music is cool and very funky at times but not as great as the underrated Soundcheck LP. I just wish he dropped those drums a little earlier in the song.

Rare records come out in the spring. As soon as the snow melts the good stuff starts turning up in the crates. Maybe people are spring cleaning their attics or something. This amazing record would be filed under progressive rock by most but its got a funkier sound than the rest of the swedish bands of the time. Great instrumentation with raw naked drums and riffy guitars and lots and lots of breaks, Midsommar is a swedish The Meters. Cool lyrics in swedish and a killer cover as well. This is the funkiest tune on the album but the rest is equally great, not equally funky though.

Sticky Stuff - S/T

80s hard rock? Sure looks like it judging by the cover. And thats not a white rat shes chewing on - its the "sticky stuff" that the group likes so much they named themself after it. But looks are deceiving as many times before. This is a mini LP with rahter slick sounding 80s Hall & Oates-esque pop/disco/soul/boogie, released in sweden 1984. It seems that the record didnt sell many copys and its now in demand by the italian and french weirdos that like anything that could be labeled as "boogie". Thats why I ripped all the tracks for a change, I haven't seen any digital version of this elsewhere.

Jayson Lindh - Stephens Cake Walk

Björn J:son Lindh is a swedish flutist with a huge discography, his 70s albums is the most interesting of the massive production. Most of them are very common in sweden but still worth to pick up - his style is often funky with a dark and moody twist. A David Axelrod from sweden. This LP was aimed for a international market and released in the US - not sure if all of the tracks are on his swedish releases. Stephens Cake Walk is the best track in my opinion but the title track is nice as well.

Ingmar Johansson - Eleanor Rigby

Its strange that this guy dont get more attention, this is music of highest caliber that realy should appeal to most people. Ingmar delivers a pretty amazing soulful, warm and breazy version of Eleanor Rigby. The rest of the LP aint great but there is a another pretty decent Steely Dan sounding tune as well. There is at least one more LP by Ingmar out there that got some killer tracks on it.

Modern Sound Quintet - Sugar Daddy

When you hear the word steel drum music you probably think of this. Music played for tourists downing coctails on a cruise ship in the caribbean. Well here is something different - a mix of jazz and funk recorded in Sweden and released in Finland incorporating steel drums. And it sure is funky, with some editing this track, entitled Sugar Daddy, could be a real killer. Im not sure but this might be the same dudes that later released this as the Modern Sound Corporation? Also a swedish only release. There can't be many copys of this around, great artwork on the cover as well. Make sure you crank up that volume when the drums kick in!

A rather odd combo, a mexican cover band touring sweden in the 60s. The title of the LP; "Love is a swedish thing" probably gives a hint on why they came here in the first place. Its mainly soul/funk standards and my choice is their mex-soul version of "It's got to be mellow".

Back from the holidays with some new tunes! This was in the post office when I got home - containing a track from the excellent Come to me softly mixtape by soulman. This song realy stod out in all its mighty soulfulness and he was kind enough to share some intel on the title. So I had to get my own, you should to, a LP that feels realy sleept on. This track is entitled "Doors" and it's a perfect message for you in the start of a new year. They don't come more soulful than this.

This has been on my wantlist for a while and last week it turned up at one of my local spots. Not the UK version but it will do for now. Its psychadelica i guess, im no expert on this area - but the goove is solid, ranging from dreamy intrumental flutey tracks to break heavy progressive. Hold on to your mind is my choice here but if you enjoy that go look for the LP cause its packed with quality.

2009 has been a great year for digging, I have found more stuff over the last 12 months than the rest of the 21st century. It even makes up for the records I passed on in the late 90s to never see again. And 2009 keeps on giving, the pic above is from yesterdays haul. Nothing spectacular, apart from Chain Reaction maybee, but 10 or so great Lps for peanuts - some spares but still quality. 2010 has a lot to live up to. The one 12" to the left in the pile from yesterday was a stormer: "Reaction - In a moment" on Strawberry. Soulful disco or even straight modern soul, if you liked Henry Woods Troupe a few posts down this is for you.

A christian band mixing some pop and gospel into their regular repertoire of mind numbing hyms. These types of bands seems to have been widely popular in sweden during the 70s. In this live recording however, the band steps outside the box and gets some straight B-boy breaks going. The crowd is chanting in swedish and if you don't speak it just imagine that they are cheering at someone doing a backspin instead.

Now here's a record that sells itself - 4 german guys in fantastic outfits and cool haircuts on the picture cover and a track named Elephant Funk. Snapped that right out the 1€-bin. The Elephant funk was a letdown but the flip, "Ayayaya" sounds like a good Jimmy Castor tune fused with some quality kraut. Bitte!

Betina - The Hunters

Here is some more good stuff from the Sir Lancelot label, check my previous post if you like this. Betina sings about the dangers that lurks it the dark end of the street - a typical 80s theme with "street crime" being a common topic in movies and music. Its not very convincing coming from Betina in stockholm, and the cover doesnt send any chills down my spine but its a great track none the less. Produced by Tomas Blank whos behind alot of releases from this era. The style is not easy to define but I would say it floats along somewhere in between balearic and italo. This is the superior 12" version with break and all.

Jerry Knight - Nothing Can Hold Us Back

This tune embodies everything I like about 80s soul. It also reminds me of why I got into crate digging way back in the day - you pick up a record that looks promising, good label, funky outfit, dope producers etc and when you drop the needle back at your house pure class flows from the speakers. Uncovering a gem like this makes it all worthwhile. This sounds a little like R Kelly when he's in his best mood. Enjoy!

Incorporating the word funk in a song title is rarely a mark of quality. In sweden however I dont think that to many people was down with the funk in the 70s. So a private pressed 7" with this title sure gets my attention. Its a solid funky rock-groove with silly lyrics about being a cry-baby. With some creative editing this could be a rock-disco tune XL.

The beauty of crate digging is that you never know what records will cross your path. This roots 12" arranged by Agustus Pablo crossed mine yesterday and hadn't it I would most likely never have heard it. Im not realy into Reggae but the more dub/roots souding stuff like this one can be a rather enjoyable listen. Popsike suggest this is a decent record token though.

This is one of a handfull swedish Lps that realy qualify as a true rarity. Acording to legend 500 copys were pressed but only 200 sold and when one of the band members passed the remaining 300 were incinerated. This is unconfirmed but this story was told by the guy who discovered this LP in the 90s. I was lucky to find a copy this summer and Im yet to decide whether to keep it or let it go in exchange for something more close to home. Meanwhile I will share the best track with you - in my opinion its the only good cut on this LP, "Asi Es La Vida".

Wlodek Gulgowski - Soundcheck

This is one diligent dude. You will find him in the credits of many many swedish recordings from the 70s. He's from poland originally but lives in sweden since the 60s. This is one of his solo LPs and I guess it falls into the "fusion" category - but dont let that scare you off, this is a great and truly funky record from start to end. Have a listen to "Pan-Jan" and "Manhattan Vibes". The cover suggest that this is a live recording but its not, still its looks like a good time whenever that picture was taken.

I brought a big pile of cheapo mid eighties 12" home yesterday, 90% of them will go back to the wild but there were some nuggets in there. A few will go on ebay but these keepers are well worth a download. Hi bitrate for the lurkers!

Gene Chandler - I'll make the living if you make the loving worthwhile

This 12" has been playing a lot in my house recently - I picked it up at my local spot mainly because of the label, Bluebird also released L.A. Nights by Yasuko Agawa which is a great tune. This must be one of Gene Chandler finest moments - the stellar production floats on in about 100bpm and its got a huge hook. The sound really has stood the test of time, the lyrics however... I don't think they would go down today. But who cares - when Gene's singing it makes sense.

Space Orchestra - Disco Time

Hidden on this swedish low budget studio band LP by Hans Edler is some proper space disco. The band is named Space Orc, I assume its a short for orchestra and not the kind of orcs you find in Lord of the rings. That would be a pretty sweet name for a band though. Another 4 minutes or so to each track wouldn't hurt so the tune lenght matches the epicness of the sound - bring out your re-editing tools. Sorry about the poor sound quality but the pressing aint the greatest and my copy seem to have been to a few space parties.

The swedish label Sir Lancelot put out some realy good stuff in the 80s and most releases are realy hard to find even in sweden. This one might not be the piece resistance of the label but still a rather catchy tune - its all about the horns. For some reason this is extremly popular in France & Italy, anyone know why? It sounds a little like something recorded in a youth recreation centre... Ill post some more of the Sir Lancelot releases in the future.

This is a record from what would be translated as "the swedish gymnastics union". Its got different sets of tracks for different users, house wifes, jazz dancers etc. This was issued in 1978 to inprove the peoples healt by dancing. Most of the tracks on here are utter rubbish but the track "Sexy" stands out with its funky philly-disco style. The dance performed to this must have been a treat for the eye.

A suitable track for my first post - this blogg has been on my mind a long time and the recording device i got is finaly working. I belive this is Per-Eriks first LP and I see it alot here in sweden so it must have sold a few copys. Its basicly xian pop with gospel influences, but with the modern soul-sounding title track. This guy also did the voice over for the swedish version of Donald Duck!
